Insurance & Medical Documentation for Your Wig Purchase
Hair loss from chemotherapy, alopecia, or another medical condition is hard enough. Paperwork shouldn't make it harder. If your doctor has prescribed a wig for medical reasons, your insurance plan may reimburse all or part of the cost, and we'll make sure you have the documentation your insurer asks for.
We Hold a National Provider Identifier (NPI)
Image Maker Wigs holds a National Provider Identifier (NPI), the identifier insurers use to recognize health care providers on claims. Most wig retailers don't have one. For you, that means your purchase documentation comes from an NPI-holding supplier, which many plans want to see on a cranial prosthesis claim.
Why Buy From an NPI-Holding Wig Specialist?
Plenty of websites sell wigs at deep discounts. What most of them can't offer is a path to insurance reimbursement. Because we hold an NPI, your purchase, whether in our Lynchburg studio or online at ImageMakerWigs.com, can come with the insurer-ready documentation many plans require for a cranial prosthesis claim. A bigger discount from a retailer without one may leave you with no claim to file at all.
For many of our clients, the possibility of insurance reimbursement, combined with personal fit and color guidance from a stylist with more than 40 years of experience, makes Image Maker Wigs the better value in the long run.
What We Provide With Your Purchase
- An itemized medical receipt listing your piece as a cranial prosthesis (not a "wig"), with the price and any customization fees
- The medical procedure code insurers use for wigs: HCPCS A9282
- Whether your piece is synthetic, heat-friendly synthetic, blended, or human hair (some plans require this)
- Our supplier information, including our NPI
- Your proof of purchase (keep your card receipt too; some insurers require it separately)
What Your Doctor Provides
Ask your dermatologist, oncologist, or physician for a prescription or letter that:
- Says cranial prosthesis rather than "wig"
- Includes your diagnosis and its diagnosis code
- Includes the physician's own NPI and signature
How Reimbursement Usually Works
- Before you buy, call your insurance plan and ask about coverage for a cranial prosthesis (HCPCS A9282), including whether out-of-network suppliers are covered and whether prior authorization is required.
- Get your prescription or letter from your doctor using the wording above.
- Purchase your piece in our Lynchburg studio or online.
- Tell us you'd like insurance documentation, and we'll prepare your medical receipt packet.
- Submit your claim to your plan with the medical receipt, proof of payment, and your prescription.
A Few Honest Notes
- Every plan is different. Some reimburse in-network or out-of-network, some cover only part of the cost, and some don't cover wigs at all. Your plan makes the final decision.
- We do not file insurance claims, and we can't guarantee reimbursement. What we can promise is complete, insurer-ready documentation and help understanding what your plan asks for.
- When you can, check your benefits before purchasing, since retroactive claims can be harder to win.
